September 5 - November 16, 2025
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Antoni Clavé (Barcelona, 1913 – Saint-Tropez, 2005), one of the fundamental figures of Catalan and Spanish art of the 20th century. For this reason, the Palau Martorell and the Reial Cercle Artístic, in collaboration with the Antoni Clavé Archives, present a major retrospective exhibition in his hometown of Barcelona.
Curated by Aude Hendgen, head of the Antoni Clavé Archives, and José Félix Bentz, co-founder of Palau Martorell and president of the Reial Cercle Artístic, the exhibition "Antoni Clavé. In Capital Letters" highlights both the artist's mastery and the relevance of his work in the development of European artistic modernity.
The exhibition invites the public to rediscover the art of Antoni Clavé through the different stages of his life, in the cities where he lived or loved the most: Barcelona, Paris, Tokyo and New York. With more than 80 works —some never before seen— from public and private collections, the exhibition traces his career from his early works to the large institutional canvases, revealing the versatility of an artist who excelled in disciplines such as painting, printmaking, sculpture and set design.
